Birdwatching

Rutland Water is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is also designated as a European Special Protection Area. The area hosts woodland, grassland and wetland bird species and in 2001 was the first place in England to witness the hatching of wild osprey for 150 years.

There are over 30 bird hides around the reservoir, 10 of which have disabled access and the birdwatching centre at Egleton at the western end of Rutland water is open daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm (4.00pm November to February). Every August Rutland Water is the venue for the internationally acclaimed British Birdwatching Fair.
